Keeping you company

Now playing

Today's company

    What it's for

A background that keeps you company.

    1. 01

      Study

A gentle beat and focus blocks set to your pace, from 10 to 90 minutes, each with its break. A bell rings at the end of each block.

    2. 02

      Work

A slightly steadier pulse that keeps you going without getting in the way.

    3. 03

      Meditate

No drums: long chords that breathe slowly, like an exhale.

    4. 04

      Sleep

Softer and softer, and it switches itself off after 30 minutes.

    How it works

    It's not a playlist. It's living music.

The music is composed in your browser, note by note, and never sounds the same twice. The optional birds use a field recording, loaded once when you switch them on.

Every 3–4 minutes a new animal joins you, changing the key, harmony and musical details. The music fades to silence, leaves a 2.5-second pause, and the next companion enters gradually. Your chosen ambience continues through that pause.

Add forest birds, rain, the sea, a quiet campfire or the crackle of vinyl. Combine the layers and adjust their volume separately: a gentle landscape, with the music close by. Leave it playing in another tab as you get on with your day.

    Notes of companionship

Sixteen ways to keep you company.

Every companion has a musical portrait: its own combination of starting note, harmony, instrument and pulse. These are the small differences you can hear as the radio moves from one animal to another.

Some share a starting note. The difference lies in their path through it: chords, spaces and rhythm tell another story.

    1. Cow

      A place beneath the sky

A guitar in F, an unhurried pulse and widely spaced arpeggios. We imagined a place where nobody rushes her: music can leave room to simply stay.

      Starting note
      F
      Main instrument
      Guitar
      Musical mood
      Warm
    2. Pig

      Warm mud

The electric piano starts from G and moves through nostalgic chords. The melody is more active than the cow’s: little questions between warm notes.

      Starting note
      G
      Main instrument
      Electric piano
      Musical mood
      Nostalgic
    3. Hen

      Dust bath

A kalimba in A draws brief sparks over serene harmony. Slightly more active arpeggios form a small conversation that keeps you company without raising its voice.

      Starting note
      A
      Main instrument
      Kalimba
      Musical mood
      Serene
    4. Greyhound

      The couch, at last

A guitar in B flat, a slightly quicker pulse and introspective chords. The music holds the energy of the journey and leaves somewhere to rest.

      Main instrument
      Guitar
      Musical mood
      Introspective
    5. Salmon

      Upstream

The electric piano in E follows bright harmony, at a pace close to the base pulse. We imagined a current moving onward: finding the way, one note at a time.

      E
      Main instrument
      Electric piano
      Musical mood
      Bright
    6. Duck

      Guitar
      Musical mood
      Warm
    7. Sheep

      Wool that stays
