01Evidence · Investigation · in post-production

An investigation into salmon farming in southern Chile. Where the industry talks about tons and biomass, we talk about those who live inside the cages.

Coming soonBeneath the cages.

An investigation in layers, from the surface to the seabed: the animal, the antibiotics, the seabed, the escapes, the protected areas and the people.

What it is

The environmental conversation about salmon farming already exists: escapes, antibiotics, seabeds. Bajo las jaulas adds the missing piece: the fish, who spend their lives confined in net pens in the fjords and channels of the south.

The investigation combines footage, a review of the scientific evidence on fish sentience and an analysis of the language the industry uses to describe them.

Why we do it

A wild salmon crosses thousands of kilometres of sea and finds his way back, by smell, to the river where he was born. In a farm cage he swims in circles, with nowhere to go. Science has gathered more than two decades of evidence that fish feel pain and stress, and what changes in this industry changes part of the global food system. Telling that life is the first step for law and society to take it into account.

How it works

  1. 01

    Research

We study the supply chain, the regulations and the impact on the animals.

  2. 02

    Record

We document the net pens and life underwater.

  3. 03

    Release

We publish the documentary openly, with sources.

  4. 04

    Propose

We use the evidence to bring fish into public policy.

Its value

i.

For the animals

Fish, the largest group of animals the industry kills, finally enter the story.

ii.

For people

A full view of what lies behind an everyday export product.

iii.

For the movement

New evidence on a topic with almost no documentation in Latin America.

Journey
